Red Theatre, “An Oak Tree,” Sound Designer, Sept-November 2018
Joined up with Red Theatre as sound designer for this production. A very special thank you to Naperville Music for allowing me to record their Disklavier. Ragtime music by Scott Joplin accelerates to impossible speeds as the “piano scene” progresses. Original composition is included in this design to incorporate thematic coherence. Drivers frequently peered at me through their car windows as I made the street recordings in Lincoln Park using a spaced pair. Quadrophonic design and switching between IEM and Wireless. Pride Films and Plays, “The Days Are Shorter,” Sound Designer, March-June (Tech/Previews 4/28-5/10), 2018
Eight-channel surround sound for this work that explores the subconscious mind. The sound design includes an offstage voice in the main character’s head that comes at her from various locations in the venue. I also composed and recorded a short piece for string quartet and a work for piano for the scene change music.
Listen to some original music I composed and recorded for the sound design in “The Days Are Shorter” below. A short string quartet (“DAYS Quartet”) and a solo piano piece “Noisserpmi” in the impressionist (Debussy-esque) style.
“One of the fascinating elements of The Days are Shorter at Pride Films and Plays is its sound design, created by John Nichols III. He composed original music for the play, engineered the mysterious voices Julia hears, and curated other sounds to create the magical dreamscape of the play.” (Pride Films & Plays, Facebook Page, italics added)

Pride Films and Plays, “Flies! The Musical!,” Sound Designer, March-June (Tech/Previews 5/2-5/11), 2018
A musical parody of “The Lord of the Flies” that quotes various musicals. For the sound design, I used a number of my original recordings to manifest the passage of time from morning to night – these include numerous birds, frogs, and Orthoptera (mostly Tettigoniidae [Katydids]) and Gryllidae [Crickets]) and Hemipterans (Cicadoidea [Cicadas]) in the Chicago area. Orthoptera such as Amblycorypha oblongifolia (Oblong-winged Katydid), Neoconocephalus ensiger (Sword-bearing Conehead), Conocephalus brevipennis (Short-winged Meadow Katydid), Microcentrum rhombifolium (Angle-Wing Katydid), Pterophylla camellifolia (Common True Katydid), and Scudderia furcata (Fork-tailed Bush Katydid).
Listen to an excerpt of the resulting soundscape below.
“…your skin may start to crawl as the all too familiar sound of cicadas and crickets reverberates in the night air” (Picture This Post, rev. of “Flies! The Musical!” by Nate Hall, italics added)

Collaboraction, “Blue Island in the Red Sea,” Sound Designer, Feb-May (Tech/Previews 4/2-4/14) 2018
What a fantastic production this was! A new work of meta-theatre that focuses on racial division and healing in Chicago. A/V Chicago assisted with the gear, so we were able to secure 10 speakers and a sub for 10-channel surround sound! Installing was a challenge, and tech was fast an furious, but we made it. I also composed and recorded a string quartet for some of the underscoring in this multi-media work. Tech was particularly intense for this production as we approached some 20 hour days.
Listen to some original music I composed and recorded for the sound design in “Blue Island in the Red Sea” below. A short string quartet (“Blue Quartet”) was used for underscoring the play.

20% Theatre Company, “Spark,” Sound Designer (w/Carpentry/Lighting/Prop Assistance), Jan-Feb 2018 (Collaboraction, Chicago, IL)
Had a fulfilling experience working as sound designer for 20% Theatre Company in this production of “Spark” by Caridad Svitch. I added a personal touch to this play with many of my original field recordings taken in France (TempsZero Residency), Virginia (Virginia Center for the Creative Arts), Arkansas, Florida (Atlantic Center for the Arts), and Illinois. Besides a variety of birds, proximity recordings of various Orthoptera (mostly Tettigoniidae) and Hemipterans (Cicadoidea) were taken, such as Amblycorypha oblongifolia, Neoconocephalus ensiger, Pterophylla camellifolia, and others. Many of these insects were captured for purposes of recording and then set free. A number of frogs can also be heard. Most of the thunder and rain was recorded in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and Savoy, Illinois. Developed skills using QLab.
“a minimalist stage ambience detailed down to individual birdsongs” (Windy City Times, rev. of “Spark” by Mary Shen Barnidge, italics added)
